Donald Meehan

Don Meehan is a renowned Canadian sports agent and the founder of Newport Sports Management Inc., the largest hockey agency in the NHL. Since establishing the firm in 1981, Meehan has represented numerous NHL stars, including Steven Stamkos, Drew Doughty, and Henrik Lundqvist. Recognized for his influential role in professional hockey, he has been named among The Hockey News' 100 People of Power & Influence.

Donald E. Meehan, born April 10, 1951, is a prominent Canadian sports agent and the founder of Newport Sports Management Inc., a leading agency in the National Hockey League. A graduate of Sir George Williams University and McGill University's Faculty of Law, Meehan began his career as a tax attorney before transitioning into sports agency.

In 1981, Meehan established Newport Sports Management, focusing on representing hockey players. His innovative approach involved engaging with young talents and their families before they were drafted, a strategy that contributed to the agency's growth. Over the years, Meehan has represented a roster of elite NHL players, including Pat LaFontaine, Wendel Clark, Al MacInnis, Trevor Linden, Nicklas Lidström, Steven Stamkos, Drew Doughty, Henrik Lundqvist, and Jarome Iginla .

Under Meehan's leadership, Newport Sports Management has become the largest hockey agency by volume in the NHL, with over 125 clients . His reputation as a shrewd negotiator and his commitment to his clients have earned him recognition as one of the most influential figures in professional hockey.

Beyond player representation, Meehan has contributed to the broader hockey community, including representing NHL officials in landmark negotiations in the early 1990s . His dedication to the sport and its athletes continues to shape the landscape of professional hockey.
